This calendar of shows is designed to help the reader determine what productions were playing opposite each other. The first Pulitzer Prize for Drama to be awarded a musical was in 1931. Carousel was the first musical recognized by the New York Drama Critics Circle. The Antoinette Perry Awards (Tonys) to honor "distinguished achievement in the theatre" were first given at the end of the 1947 season. As a result of this, the following chart lists the shows produced prior to 1947 by year of opening while those entries after 1947 are listed by season. Pulitzer Prizes are marked PUL, Drama Critics DC and Tonys TY with the categories abbreviated as follows:
